How I work.
Quick answers to the most common questions I face from prospective clients.
what is your design process?
Prior to commencing any project work, I always familiarise myself with the brief, the client in question and all relevant research gathered up to that point. These aspects inform my approach to the work, as do the wider project team with their considerations of scope, timelines and budget.
With the groundwork and expectations set, the nature of my design process from there onwards is to inform every decision on the basis of known quantities, whether they be relative (e.g. commercial objectives, pain points and personas) or objective (e.g. design principles, usability conventions and accessibility compliance).
what is your ui / ux ratio?
80:20, weighted towards UI.
It’s that way around because the craft of user interface design is the part of my job I enjoy most! That being said, I am no less reliant than any other designer upon the foundational work that precedes it. Where UX output is concerned, I am well versed in the tasks that dovetail with the UI phase, including prescribing information architecture, content priority orders and user flows.
what software do you use?
Figma, almost exclusively. I have recently embraced Figma Sites, which I’ve used to create this website. I also use FigJam for tasks like sitemaps, user flows and moodboards. As for project tools, I’ve used a variety in recent years including JIRA, Confluence and Trello.
With regards to AI adoption, I am slowly introducing it into my Figma workflow but only for low level, non-creative tasks (e.g. spinning up a variable collection).
Do you use a PC, or mac?
I use both but for work, it’s a Mac.
do you work on-site, hybrid or remote?
Fully remote, though I do make occasional on-site visits if required.
